04 Jun NMWTRA Degree Apprentice Turned Tunnel – Tech
We are very pleased to welcome Kai Tudor into the role of Specialist Technician – Tunnels & Technology within the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team, looking after assets and managing projects on the trunk road network.
Kai joined NMWTRA in August 2022 on a three year Mechanical and Electrical Degree Apprenticeship before securing a full-time, permanent role with the Agency in May this year.
He started his apprenticeship after completing a two-year Level 3 qualification at college before applying for a place at university, he accepted an offer at John Moore University before seeing the advert for an apprenticeship placement just three weeks before leaving. The apprenticeship allowed Kai to stay local and earn a wage while completing a bachelor’s degree and gaining three years’ work experience.
Kai said: “I was full time at college before joining NMWTRA, but I’ve found it more useful to get the hands-on experience with electrical and electronic engineering systems.
Working with the agency makes you realise how much work goes into keeping the roads operational, which I find interesting.”
Kai’s line manager, Jamie Morris, commented: “Kai joined NMWTRA as a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Degree Apprentice, studying one day a week at university while gaining hands-on experience with the ITS team. His role has involved the day-to-day management of ITS assets, as well as active contributions to a wide range of projects.
Over the past few years, Kai has played a key role in several major initiatives, including Factory and Site Acceptance Testing for systems deployed onsite—such as the Dyfi Bridge Pumping Station and DAC Roadside Telephones.”
As an apprentice, Kai has gained many practical skills rather than just theoretical work alone including learning about managing assets and projects, how electrical works are carried out in practical situations, and how engineers work in the industry.
Jamie continued: “NMWTRA has proudly supported Kai’s development through academic projects and real-world learning opportunities, helping him grow both technically and professionally.
We’re thrilled to announce that Kai has now secured a permanent role as a Specialist Technician within the ITS team. This achievement reflects both his dedication and the value of investing in early career talent. We wish him every success in his new role.”
Kai would like to thank his line manager, Jamie Morris, and the ITS team for supporting him during his apprenticeship.
