Laying the Foundation for the Future

Congratulations Tomos Humphreys for achieving the HNC in Civil Engineering.

Tomos joined NMWTRA in July 2023 as Technician Inspector Structures within the Structures Unit. He has responsibility for General and Principal inspections along the network and is working towards managing his own program of work which will require a level of technical drawing.

Before joining NMWTRA, Tomos worked at Gelli Civil Engineering Company. Here he had responsibility for administration and H&S duties. Tomos said: “Both my brothers are experienced Civil Engineers, and I was always interested in what they were doing. Being on site and seeing the structures from an alternative view to what we experience as members of the public was an exciting prospect.”

Tomos continued: “Before starting the course I did have concerns that other students had a lot more experience, and it was daunting at first. My line manager and the Structures team were supportive all the way through which helped a lot.”

Having achieved a Distinction in the HNC, Tomos is now heading into a Civil Engineering Degree at Liverpool John Moores University starting September 2025.

Commenting on Tomos’s achievement, his line manager, Matthew Ricketts, Senior Structures Manager, said: “Tomos should be very proud of passing his HNC with such good grades. He is also proving to be to be an extremely valuable member of the team, approaching all his tasks with enthusiasm. Congratulations Tomos and good luck for your upcoming studies in Liverpool!”

Tomos would like to thank his line manager Matthew and the Mid Structures team for supporting him during his HNC, and to Callum and Matt for being excellent classmates during their time in college.

In lieu of missing his graduation, due to following Wales’s Rugby Team in Japan, he’s sent a photo of himself with a flag, rather than a cap and gown!
