Building Success and a Strong Future

A testament to hard work and dedication, we’re celebrating success as we announce Callum Jones has achieved the HNC Civil Engineering qualification. By adding this expertise to the team, Callum is ready to help us design and deliver even greater projects.

Callum joined NMWTRA just over two years ago in his current role as Technician Inspector within the Structures Unit, Callum has responsibility for carrying out General and Principal Inspections of structures across the network.

Callum had intended to pursue a career in Sport Psychology, having completed two years of a Sports Science degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University, his career took a different path when he accepted a job in Australia.

Callum said: “I spent three months as a concrete tester for a laboratory in Perth. The testing assesses a concrete’s quality, workability and strength using on-site and laboratory methods to ensure it meets design specifications and structural requirements. It was this job that would kickstart my interest in Civil Engineering, and it gave me a strong foundation for getting the job with NMWTRA.”

He continued: “The HNC is a two-year course which has given me the opportunity to progress onto a BEng Civil Engineering degree alongside the Bridge Inspection Certification Scheme (BICS).”

Within his role, Callum has responsibility for undertaking General and Principal Inspections. These are allocated annually and include bridges, tunnels, culverts, retaining walls, CCTV masts, sign gantries, VMS and footbridges.

This is a very hands-on role requiring in-depth inspections to be carried out and any defects categorised by severity and extent and reported via the IRIS asset management system.

Describing his experience at NMWTRA, Callum commented: “It’s a great team, everyone is supportive of one another and the opportunity for professional development is greatly encouraged.”

Commenting on his achievement, Callum’s line manager, and Senior Structures Maintenance Engineer, Wyn Williams said: “Callum should be very proud of his academic achievement whilst simultaneously developing his practical knowledge and experience. Callum is becoming an ever-increasingly valuable member of the team, and this will continue into the future.”
