Celebrating Excellence: NMWTRA Receives Special Recognition Award

NMWTRA are proud to be recognised this year by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s (NWFRS) in their Special Recognition Award at a ceremony held at Venue Cymru last month. The award celebrates the outstanding work carried out by NWFRS staff and partners during the Conwy Tunnel fire back in June 2025.

This recognition celebrates the joint commitment to public safety and highlights the strength of the partnership and NMWTRA’s contribution to the response to the tunnel fire incident.

The recognition not only highlights the joint commitment to public safety but also reflects the extensive preparation and collaboration that took place long before the incident. NMWTRA conduct annual tunnel safety exercises and host numerous tunnel familiarisation sessions with emergency services throughout the year, ensuring that all partners are well-prepared to respond effectively in critical situations. It’s a testament to the strength of the partnership and the proactive work NMWTRA do to make a difference in the community.

Commenting on the achievement, Mark McNamara, NMWTRA’s Head of Service, said: “It is fantastic recognition of the dedication and hard work that our teams are prepared to undertake without question.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this achievement, from those directly involved in the incident, to the many teams who supported behind the scenes.”

The annual awards, presented by The Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd, honour long service and good conduct of firefighters and operational staff. They also extend to recognise loyal service community initiatives, outstanding contributions by individuals, and special recognition of staff and partners.
