To manage and coordinate technical Arboriculture / tree protection matters for the North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency, and on behalf of the Welsh Government (WG), in order to ensure that such matters are given due consideration in all aspects of the Agency’s work.

Responsibility for functions  . e.g. staff, budgets, equipment:

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining systems and processes to ensure that technical Arboriculture matters relating to tree protection are adequately considered across all work streams on behalf of the Agency.
  • Carrying out and supervising technical Arboriculture works on behalf of various teams (drainage, lighting, capital delivery etc) across the Agency (e.g. producing all aspects of BS5837 surveys and reports and supervising construction works to ensure compliance; supervising tree works to BS3998 standard, supervising tree planting, etc)
  • Responsible for budgets relating to the management of Technical Arboriculture / tree protection matters across the SRN.
  • Responsible for supporting, liaising and working with others across NMWTRA and Welsh Government in relation to technical arboriculture / tree protection matters on the trunk road network.
  • To assist with tree safety inspections as required.
  • Responsible for items of environmental equipment including a PICUS, residrill, laptop, mobile phone, Welsh Government asset management information and other survey equipment and books etc.

Qualifications and Relevant Training

Essential

  • Degree / level 6 in Arboriculture / Urban Forestry or Degree in other relevant specialist / environmental field.

Desirable

  • Membership of relevant professional body (e.g. Arboricultural Association, Institute of Chartered Foresters, IEEMA / ISEP).
  • Qualifications in related specialist fields.
  • Basic and / or Professional Tree Inspectors Qualification.

Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Experience in Arboriculture / Urban Forestry or in another relevant specialist / environmental field.
  • Interest in and knowledge of the management of trees, woodlands, and urban trees and species identification.
  • Good ability for writing reports, management plans or similar.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Experience of carrying out surveys, ideally in an arboriculture context.
  • Experience of working with others and in a team.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and policies.

Desirable

  • Experience of carrying out BS5837 surveys and reports.
  • Experience of carrying out tree pruning works in accordance with BS3998
  • Experience of tree planting
  • Experience of carrying out tree safety surveys.
  • Experience of working remotely.
  • Experience of supervising and /or advising others.

Skills and Specialist Knowledge

Essential

  • Urban tree management and / or woodland / environmental management.
  • IT literate.
  • Health & Safety Awareness.
  • Ability to organise work priorities, forward plan and deliver work on time
  • Ability to receive, assimilate and evaluate information from multiple sources
  • Current valid driving licence.

Desirable

  • Ecological expertise
  • Familiarity with GIS.
  • Experience of Nature Based Solutions
  • Experience in managing for climate change / carbon reduction
  • Budget management skills
  • Knowledge of Traffic Management Legislation and Best Practice

Language requirements
Essential

Welsh desirable, English essential.
