13 Feb National Apprenticeship Week Spotlight
Morgan Lukacs started his Civil Engineering apprenticeship with NMWTRA in September 2024 after completing a BTEC in Sports and Exercise Science and completing a year at Liverpool John Moores University also studying the same degree. Morgan completed his first year before deciding university wasn’t right for him.
Morgan then came across this job in a completely new field and decided the apprenticeship was a great opportunity to work in a new sector and learn something new despite having no previous background in Civil Engineering.
In his first year, Morgan worked with the Route Management team, patrolling the network to ensure it was clear of hazards, defects, and obstructions. Now in his second year of the apprenticeship, he has had the opportunity to work with the Structures team that inspects and maintains highway structures such as bridges and retaining walls.
During his time with NMWTRA, Morgan has been on several courses to gain qualifications and had the opportunity to visit different venues and locations to learn about the road network.
Morgan commented: “Everyone within NMWTRA has been incredibly welcoming since I started, and they are always ready to help me with my work.
I’m in my second year of the HNC in Civil Engineering and due to finish my apprenticeship in September 2026, and I am working towards landing a full-time position with NMWTRA once my apprenticeship has come to an end, as it’s a great company to work for, that cares about the team, and provides several opportunities and experiences for its employees.”
