National Apprenticeship Week Spotlight

Jacob Mitchell started with NMWTRA as a Civil Engineering apprentice in September 2024, straight after college where he studied A-level Welsh, Music, and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

He decided he wanted to pursue an apprenticeship as he wasn’t 100% sure what he wanted to study at university, and he didn’t want the associated debt. Jacob also wanted to focus on building a solid career.

He started off in the projects team, developing project management skills and learning a lot about the agency. Jacob also started college the same month and is currently in his 2nd year of the Civil Engineering HNC, spending one day a week in college.

Jacob said: “Recently I have been spending two days a week with the Inspections team, assisting with highway inspections, and gaining more experience in a wide range of teams.

I have been on one of the tunnel closure exercises, and I have a visit to the Menai Bridge coming up. I also attended the NMWTRA event hosting the President of the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).”

After completing his apprenticeship in September 2026, Jacob hopes to secure a permanent role within NMWTRA and possibly pursue a degree in Civil Engineering.
