16 Feb Stepping Up From Apprentice to Permanent Administration Role
Niamh McNamara joined NMWTRA in November 2024 after completing her A-levels at 6th Form. She had decided not to go to university as she wasn’t sure what she wanted to study. She wanted to work and get experience in a job, so when she saw that NMWTRA had a Business Apprenticeship advertised, she thought it would be a good opportunity and applied.
As Niamh was doing a business apprenticeship, she was based mainly in the Administration team, within the Business and Statutory Unit, where she carried out day-to-day administrative tasks by communicating and assisting all staff in the agency.
Niamh said: “I have experienced other job roles within NMWTRA which has really helped me understand how a business comes together and works. I have been with different teams in the agency like Streetworks where I assisted with some of their tasks.
I have been with the Inspections team and got to go out on the road network with them along with having a couple of overtime shifts. I have also had the chance to experience what the Traffic Wales team do along with the Procurement team, Tunnel Resilience team and Finance team.”
Niamh was studying the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Business. She commented: “I have really enjoyed the course. The day-to-day work I carry out at NMWTRA is relevant to the work I received in college, so it gave me a better understanding of my assignments, and I used my experience as examples.”
She continued: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with NMWTRA so far. Everyone in the agency is so supportive and willing to help. I think it’s a great place to work.”
Niamh completed her apprenticeship in February 2026. Her future plan is to study towards a higher qualification in business.
